Book Review: Lost in the Never Woods by, Aiden Thomas

I am very excited to bring you Lost in the Never Woods by, Aiden Thomas. This is the second book by this author. Their first book, Cemetery Boys, was one of my favorites from last year so I was very intrigued to see if this sophomore work could live up to my high expectations. Did it? Read on to see… then enter to win a print copy of the book for yourself!

Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

When children go missing, people want answers. When children go missing in the small coastal town of Astoria, people look to Wendy for answers.

It’s been five years since Wendy and her two brothers went missing in the woods, but when the town’s children start to disappear, the questions surrounding her brothers’ mysterious circumstances are brought back into light. Attempting to flee her past, Wendy almost runs over an unconscious boy lying in the middle of the road, and gets pulled into the mystery haunting the town.

Peter, a boy she thought lived only in her stories, claims that if they don’t do something, the missing children will meet the same fate as her brothers. In order to find them and rescue the missing kids, Wendy must confront what’s waiting for her in the woods.

Like I said in the introduction, Aiden Thomas’ first book, Cemetery Boys, was one of my favorite reads of 2020. The author created characters and a plot line that I loved. But more than that, I really felt an emotional connection to the characters and wanted them to succeed. This is what I was hoping for in Lost in the Never Woods.

Lost in the Never Woods is a modern twist on the classic tale, Peter Pan. (Fairy tale retellings are all the rage right now!) And while there are significant nods to the original tale, this book has a story all its own. The plot moves quickly so you have to really be paying attention or you will miss something. The pace, I think, mimics what is going on inside our heroine, Wendy, making you feel for all that she is going through.

You see, Wendy is broken. She survived a trauma but is still trying to figure out how to move on. When more children start to disappear, her past comes to the surface again – along with a strange boy named Peter. Can they work together to save the children of Astoria? Will they be able to bring John and Michael home? With a plot line that is part fairy tale and part fantasy but set in a neighborhood that could be in your own hometown, the pacing and the character complexity work well together.

While this is a very different book than Cemetery Boys, I am happy to report that I still felt that emotional connection to the characters and enjoyed the plot line which kept me glued to the pages until the very end.

I’m so very glad that this book was as great as I expected it to be. I can now add Aiden Thomas to my list of automatic-read authors and I can’t wait to see what they come up with next!!

I give this book 4 Sips
