There, she must face the biggest challenges in her career and life—the first love she had left behind and her father’s unsolved murder.

But before she has time to unpack her car, Nikki stumbles upon the dead body of local news anchor, Ashleigh Addison, her childhood rival. Could Ashleigh’s death be connected to an explosive news story that she had teased about airing live? Did that explosive story have anything to do with the murder of Nikki’s father?

What was your inspiration for this Killer Deadline?

Killer Deadline is my first cozy mystery series. I currently write books for four other series. The Mac Faraday mysteries, the Lovers in Crime, The Thorny Rose mysteries, and the Chris Matheson Cold Case mysteries. As an independent author, my mysteries are generally a blended genre—a mixture of police procedural and mysteries.

I was actually working on my fourteenth Mac Faraday mystery when the idea of a mysteries with a female protagonist, an investigative journalist struck me. AS the character of Nikki Bryant and her family and friends, and the small-town location came to life, I realized that Killer Deadline had to be a cozy mystery.

How did you select the names of your characters?

I have a lot of trouble with naming my characters. Sometimes, the character’s name will pop into my head as they come to life. It’s like they stand up and introduce themselves. That was the case for Nikki Bryant.

Other times, I do internet searches and call writer friends to actively search for a name that will help me to visualize the character. This usually happens with minor—guest characters. I have been known to change characters’ names when the book was being proofed right before its release.

What are the books that changed your life?

Agatha Christie’s mysteries. Especially, And Then There Were None. That book made me want to be a murder mystery writer. Yet, I didn’t think I could ever be that clever. It was decades before I decided to give it a try.

How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?

I am now working on my thirtieth book. Publishing my first book made any doubt I had that I could finish writing a novel evaporate. Ever since then, when I start writing a book, no matter what obstacle I may run into, I just keep on writing through it. Now I average writing three books a year.
