Gift Guide: Book Subscription Boxes

Monthly subscription boxes are all the rage these days so I decided to give a few a try. Here are the results of my not-so-scientific look at a few book-centered monthly subscription boxes and services.

Owlcrate

How they describe themselves:

Every month we’ll send you a magical book box tailored to a super fun theme! Every single box will include a brand new young adult novel, 3-5 high quality bookish items, as well as exclusive goodies from the author! Every box has a creative theme that ties everything together. And the books we send will keep you up all night!

Pricing (as of blog publication date):

Bad news: OwlCrate has a waiting list for subscriptions right now (yes, it’s that awesome). However, there is a part of the site where you can shop past boxes, which would make a great gift too! Or you can join the Wait List and cross your fingers and toes that spots become available.

Good news: OwlCrate Jr. is currently open for subscription. This monthly service is designed for children ages 8-12, or those that are just young at heart! This subscription is $27.99 per month.

What I thought…

I loved my OwlCrate box! It really helped that it was a double-book box and I really wanted to read both books. But everything I received was super-high quality and fun. Looking ahead at their future boxes, I knew that the themes they were going to be featuring were going to be something that I wanted to enjoy so I got my subscription request in just before they sold out! Watch for future posts about my OwlCrate goodies!

Fairyloot

How they describe themselves:

What’s inside the box? FAIRYLOOT IS A BOX OF BOOKISH TREASURE STOLEN FROM A FAIRY’S LAIR. Well, sort of. It’s actually a fantasy-focused monthly book subscription box containing a recently-released Young Adult book and a selection of 5-6 high-quality bookish goodies. We work very closely with the best authors and leading publishing houses to regularly surprise you with special edition books that will keep you up all night!

Pricing as of blog publication date:

Fairyloot is $33.90 for a single month box. They offer 3-month and 6-month options as well.

What I thought…

I purchased the Fairyloot October box because I really loved the theme – Vampires. I love Vampire books and everything that goes with them. Consequently, I loved my Fairyloot box too. I think I even liked the contents a bit better than OwlCrate. What made the difference for me between Fairyloot and OwlCrate is that Fairyloot is very heavily fantasy-based. I don’t exclusively read or always enjoy fantasy novels, so the subscription felt a little limiting to me. That being said, I will be watching their site to purchase future boxes if a theme catches my eye.

Once Upon a Book Club

How they describe themselves:

Adding a different element to reading… A unique reading experience! Each month you’ll receive a book (can be paperback or hardcover) to read, a 5″ x 7″ quote print, along with 3-5 corresponding gifts to match a quote/item mentioned in the book. Each individually wrapped with a page number. Readers, open the gifts as they finish the corresponding page. The experience is unforgettable! It makes the reader feel as if the book is truly coming to life!

You’ll also find book club discussion questions in each monthly box. Each question will have a date next to it. Log onto our Instagram page on that date to discuss the book with other members of the Book Club community!

Pricing as of blog publication:

Once Upon a Book Club is $34.99 for a single month. Other payment options are available.

What I thought…

The concept of this box is fantastic! Seriously. I wish I would have come up with this! The book and the goodies were such fun, and to read along and share the experience with others is amazing. You can choose between Adult or Young Adult boxes, which is also a plus. For me, I think I will enjoy shopping with them and getting boxes for books that I am really interested in rather than subscribing.
