And now, let’s learn more about this awesome bookish business…
What is Erin Casey Crafts?
I make jewelry from real upcycled book pages. I try to find books that have already been very well loved and give them new life.
How did you come up with the name for your business?
I actually couldn’t come up with one when I signed up for my first craft show so I went with my first and middle name and it just stuck! I thought Erin Casey Crafts sounded better than Erin Casey Jewelry so I went with that. At the time I thought I’d end up changing it but it’s 4.5 years later and it’s still here!
How do you come up with the ideas for your crafts?
I like to make sure I have read any books I make jewelry from. When I am going to make jewelry from a new book, I read it armed with little post-it flags, or listen to the audiobook ready to hit the “bookmark” button. Every time a line or word hits me I flag it to come back to.
What do you enjoy the most about your product?
I like to joke that my jewelry is like a secret code that bookish people can use to identify each other. Especially since so many of us bookworms tend to be a little more introverted, it’s like a subtle sign to other bookworms, “Hey, I’m one of your people” and can be a great conversation starter. An example is any of my pieces that have the Harry Potter star designs on it. It doesn’t actually say Harry Potter anywhere, but when other Potterheads see it, they know it.
What is your favorite product and why?
That is like asking a parent to pick their favorite child! But the first that comes to mind is a pendant of my favorite quote from one of my favorite books, Stephen Kings “It’ that says “Be brave, be true, stand” I have sold one to a fellow Stephen King fan and made one for myself.
What was the first product you ever sold?
At the first craft show I ever did my first sale was a book page pendant made from a dictionary page that said “Mother” on it. I was actually making more beaded jewelry at the time, so looking back it seems like a sign that one of my book page pieces was the first to sell.
